Do You Need Maths and English for the Level 3 Early Years Educator Diploma?
It's the question we're asked more than any other about the Level 3 Diploma in Early Years Educator, usually by someone who loves working with children and is dreading the words "GCSE maths". The short answer is no — and here's exactly what the diploma does and doesn't ask of you.
The short answer

What the diploma actually asks of you
From enrolment to certificate, the Level 3 Diploma in Early Years Educator is built entirely around early years knowledge and practice. The units are:
- •Child development (0–5 years)
- •Play, learning and enabling environments
- •EYFS statutory framework in practice
- •Health, wellbeing and safeguarding
- •Partnership with parents, carers and agencies
- •Professional practice and reflective learning
You're assessed by portfolio of evidence and work-based learning — building a portfolio from your own day-to-day work with children, with observations of your practice — rather than sitting exams. There is no maths test and no English exam anywhere in that process, because none of it is what the qualification is measuring.
One thing worth knowing: your evidence is written in English
To be clear about where the line actually sits: you don't need an English qualification to enrol or to pass, but your portfolio evidence — the write-ups of your practice that your assessor reviews — is written or presented in English, in your own words. If putting things in writing isn't your strong point, that's exactly what your assessor is there to help with; it's support with expressing what you already know, not a hidden English test.
Maths isn't required for the job either
It's not just the course. If you're asking because you're worried about what comes after — will I actually be able to use this qualification — maths isn't a requirement for working as a Level 3 practitioner either. That's been the case for group and school-based settings since a change to the EYFS statutory framework that took effect on 4 January 2024.
There is a separate, narrower rule about a Level 2 English qualification for counting in your setting's staff:child ratios once you're qualified — that's a question about your job, not about this diploma, and the detail depends on when you qualified and what qualifications you already hold. What you do need to enrol
To be upfront about the entry requirement that does apply: this diploma is for people already working in an early years or childcare setting, since your assignments and observations are built around your own workplace practice.
